Stephen L. Kash, MD, FACS
Founding Partner Emeritus

Ophthalmologist Wilmington | Dr. Stephen L. Kash, M.D.A Kentucky native, Dr. Kash graduated from Davidson College, then went on to Washington University School of Medicine. Dr. Kash did a surgical residency at Barnes Hospital in St. Louis, which was followed by a tour in the Navy. He then completed an ophthalmology residency at Barnes Hospital/Washington University.

Dr. Kash is a Board Certified Diplomate of the American Board of Ophthalmology and a Fellow of the American Academy of Ophthalmology and the American College of Surgeons.

In addition to his clinical appointments, Dr. Kash maintains memberships in several professional societies, including:

  • The New Hanover-Pender County Medical Society
  • The North Carolina Medical Society
  • The American Medical Association
  • The North Carolina Society of Eye Physicians and Surgeons
  • The American Society of Cataract and Refractive Surgery

Dr. Kash retired from active practice in 2006.


James L. Kesler, MD, FACS

Kesler, M.D.Dr. Kesler was a James Scholar who graduated Phi Beta Kappa with Highest Distinction in Biochemistry from the University of Illinois and was selected for Bronze Tablet / All University Honors and was an Alpha Omega Alpha graduate of the Washington University School of Medicine before completing a medical internship at the University of Virginia at Charlottesville and an ophthalmology residency at Barnes Hospital/Washington University.

Dr. Kesler is a Board Certified Diplomate of the American Board of Ophthalmology.

Dr. Kesler is a Fellow of the American Academy of Ophthalmology and served as Councillor for North Carolina from 1998 thru 2003. Dr. Kesler is a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons and has been a Board of Directors member of the North Carolina Chapter of the American College of Surgeons from 1997 to present. In 2008, Dr. Kesler was elected to the Board of Governors of the American College of Surgeons.

Dr. Kesler is an active member of the North Carolina Medical Society and has served as Chairman of the Eye Care Committee, as a member of the Nominating Committee and as a Delegate to the House of Delegates on multiple occasions. Dr. Kesler is a member and former President of the North Carolina Society of Eye Physicians and Surgeons and the New Hanover-Pender County Medical Society.

Dr. Kesler is a member of the American Medical Association and the American Society of Cataract and Refractive Surgery.

Dr. Kesler is a consultant in ophthalmology at Duke University and was a founding Board of Directors member of Community Eye Care.

Dr. Kesler specializes in cataract surgery with lens implantation and comprehensive
ophthalmology with a particular interest in glaucoma and diabetic eye disease diagnosis and
management including laser treatment.

Coastal Carolina Eye Clinic, PA has always been dedicated to providing the latest innovations in eye care to the Wilmington area. In southeastern North Carolina, Dr. Kesler implanted the first intraocular lens, performed the first visually successful corneal transplant and utilized the first laser in the area to treat glaucoma and diabetic retinopathy.

In August 2008, Dr. Kash and Dr. Kesler led a medical missionary trip to Raki Raki, Fiji in which approximately 1,000 patients were screened and 100 patients had cataract surgery with lens implantation.


Molly V. Allen, MD, FACS

Ophthalmologist Wilmington | Dr. Molly V. Allen, M.D.Dr. Allen is a Phi Beta Kappa graduate of Southern Methodist University and the University of Texas at San Antonio School of Medicine. Dr. Allen completed her ophthalmology residency at the University of North Carolina in Chapel Hill. She is a Board Certified Diplomate of the American Board of Ophthalmology, a Fellow of the American Academy of Ophthalmology and the American College of Surgeons.

In addition to her clinical appointments, Dr. Allen maintains memberships in several professional societies, including:

Dr. Allen carries the unique distinction of being the first female surgeon and ophthalmologist in Wilmington.


Gregory J. Johnson, MD

Ophthalmologist Wilmington | Dr. Gregory J. Johnson, M.D.Originally from Cincinnati, Ohio, Dr. Johnson graduated from the University of Virginia and the Medical University of Ohio. After completing an internship in General Surgery at the Medical University of South Carolina, he went on to finish his Ophthalmology residency at the world-renowned Storm Eye Institute in Charleston, South Carolina.

As a Comprehensive Ophthalmologist, Dr. Johnson provides a full range of medical and surgical eye care. His particular interests include cataract and lens implantation surgery, laser surgery, glaucoma, and diabetic eye disease. Dr. Johnson has extensive experience with the latest cutting-edge technology in cataract and laser surgery.

Dr. Johnson is board certified by the American Board of Ophthalmology. He is a Fellow of the American Academy of Ophthalmology. In addition to his clinical appointments, Dr. Johnson maintains memberships in several professional societies, including:

  • The American Academy of Ophthalmology
  • The American Society of Cataract and Refractive Surgery
  • The American Medical Association
  • The North Carolina Society of Eye Physicians and Surgeons

Dr. Johnson currently serves on the Board of Directors for Prevent Blindness North Carolina.


George K. Escaravage, Jr., M.D.

Ophthalmologist Wilmington | Dr. George K. Escaravage, Jr., MDDr. George K. Escaravage, Jr. grew up in Waynesville, NC. He attended Davidson College, where he was elected into Phi Beta Kappa and graduated magna cum laude. He graduated with distinction from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill School of Medicine. After completing an internship in Internal Medicine at California Pacific Medical Center in San Francisco, he returned to UNC to complete residency in Ophthalmology. After serving as Chief Resident, he received a faculty appointment as Clinical Instructor of Ophthalmology at UNC.

Dr. Escaravage completed a fellowship in Ophthalmic Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery and Ocular Oncology at UNC sponsored by the American Society of Ophthalmic Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery. This highly specialized training involved the evaluation and surgical treatment of many disorders involving the eyelids, tear drainage system, orbit, eyebrows, and the upper and mid-face.

Dr. Escaravage is a Board Certified Diplomate of the American Board of Ophthalmology, a Fellow of the American Academy of Ophthalmology, and will be eligible for membership in the American Society of Ophthalmic Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery this winter. He is also an active member of the American Academy of Ophthalmology and the North Carolina Society of Eye Physicians and Surgeons. He maintains a faculty appointment at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill as a Clinical Assistant Professor.

Within his specialty, Dr. Escaravage cares for patients from infancy to adulthood with eyelid drooping or malpositions, various types of tumors and cancer in and around the eye, tearing problems, facial spastic disorders, and patients desiring periocular rejuvenation. He often works with other specialists to care for complex medical issues as they relate to the periocular area such as cancer, developmental malformations, and trauma.

Dr. Escaravage is the first American Society of Ophthalmic Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery (ASOPRS) fellowship trained Oculoplastic Surgeon in Southeastern North Carolina.
